Santa Cruz, CA

Two breakfasts on today. Some beach time and some Thai. A colony of sea lions live out under the peer.

After a dinner of home made bruschetta i met up with a couple of the crew to roll down to the bike in movie being shown under the SoCal bridge. A half pint of organic blackberry ice cream, a spoon, and a blanket. I was set. Set to fall asleep during the middle of the movie! Adam wakes me up so we can cruise home. This makes two nights in a row. I must be tired.

San Francisco, CA to Santa Cruz, CA [77 miles]

I was going to kick it in The City through Wednesday but 35 people were riding out to Santa Cruz on Monday to hang out and visit the Bike Church. Although this was supposed to be leg recovery time when else would I going to be able to ride with such a large group during this trip. Plus a car was set up to ferry everyone’s gear. 80 miles with one pannier was the final straw that broke my wait to ride back.

It was a good chill ride. Lots of stops. Got to know everyone much better now that we were just laying back and cruising rather than hustling between the various forums. Met Kelly Brown on her Soma Double Cross as she caught the group midway in. She is one of the owners of a start-up bicycle messenger business running out of the space next to the Bike Church. We pull away and pair ride out way into town beating the darkness and the rest of the group.

A huge family style dinner around a bon fire. I fell asleep in a chair. At some point Adam, one of the bike church guys, woke me up and I headed back to his place to crash out on the floor.

San Francisco, CA

Bike Bike! conference most of the day. We finish up mid afternoon and head out on a tour of the city with a focus on the labor movement from the founding of the town to the present metropolis. The peninsula was originally inhabited by rolling sand dunes. Cold cold cold, steep hills. SF almost went the way of NY. Plans were on the books to run freeways all over and throughout the core of the city. Only the neighborhood associations uniting killed the plan at the last minute, barely dodging being split up and isolated much like NY.

San Francisco, CA

Bike Bike! conference all day. Lots of good vegan food. Interesting forums, especially the frame building one. SF is a city of frustrating micro climates. Ever 4 blocks the temperature rises or drops 10 degrees. I am carrying 3 seasons of clothes for each cross town commute.

Wanted to make it out to Oakland to see my friend lovely lady friend Rebecca but the stars did not align themselves. Settled for the fire spitting, music playing, trick bike riding Bike Bike! party.

Bodega Bay, CA to San Francisco, CA [75 miles]

I stand on the Golden Gate Bridge. Wind hammering against me as I lean on the railing. I face west as the sun sets through the mist. I cry.

SF is cold. And I am tired, in need of a shower, and working on tracking down a place to crash. I should have a better prospective in the morning when the sun is out and I am eating breakfast.

Dinner on Union Street. Worked on tracking down a place to crash since one spot fell through. Headed for one of the bike bike pads. Found unreasonably steep hills. Decided I would rather walk my bike up them than search for a way around. Hoping this is the house, rang the door bell and was welcomed in with a place to roll out my mat and some food.
